Peek At My Week : May 24

It's been way over 60 days since we've been staying inside (except for my morning and evening walks). Many of my friends are starting to go out to eat in restaurants, getting together with friends, and possibly resuming playing mahjong or cards outdoors on their large decks.

Am I going to be the last person to start joining in? Personally, I still feel kind of reluctant to re-join society just yet!. I'm thinking I'll give it 3 more weeks and see how those who have led the way are still fairing?

What I'm Reading:

It doesn't have much of a cover, but American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins is an Oprah Pick and a riveting story that sucks you in from the first sentence and doesn't release you until the very last word! I couldn't put it down.
It's the story of a mother and a son who narrowly escape while their entire extended family- grandmothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, and their father are shot down by the cartel at a family gathering. It is the story of this mother's desperation to take her son and flee Acapulco to try to reach America while the Mexican cartel is still hunting them. It is the story of the risky, frightening, dangerous journey that immigrants fleeing Mexico and South American countries endure trying to escape to America.  It's a tough read but a good read!

What I'm Watching On Netflix: Dead To Me

I'm watching season one, season two just came out! Very entertaining and looking forward to watching season two.  It stars Christian Applegate (who does a great job) and Linda Cardellini. A weird twist of fate brings the two women together as they help each other with their emotional needs and trying to survive with the extreme difficulties of their situations! Funny at times and quite entertaining! Good acting.

The Rainman Twins: Documentary

This documentary is the life story of Flo and Kay who are autistic savant twins. It's quite fascinating and gives insight into their extraordinary memories for facts and dates. It was about an hour and a very interesting watch!

What I'm cooking?

It's getting warmer and this room temperature salad that I found on Shirley's blog, Gluten-Free Easily, is really healthy and delicious!  It is easy to make, has lots of protein, and plenty of flavor.

Here is the recipe for triple bean salad for a light easy dinner with a bowl of Quickest Root vegetable soup that is also a winner!

What's Pissing Me Off This Week: Emotional Support Dogs
I would really like to hear if I am alone on this one.

We live in a 600 unit, pet-free, highrise building in Miami Dade County in Florida.
Residents do have service dogs, but people also have "emotional support dogs". Neither is considered a pet. So we have about 70 +  dogs living in our building.

Why am I pissed off: The owners of this small , medium, or very large dogs have an attitude. They feel entitled and are often thoughtless and inconsiderate to their neighbors ( who thought they were buying in a pet-free building). Their dogs accompany them to the laundry room, elevators, and sit in the lobby. Their leashes are long and the dogs like to say hello. They often sniff, lick, and jump on other neighbors. When you ask the owner to please keep their dog away from you, they became very offended and defensive. What you don't like my dog? What you are afraid of my dog? What? he is not bothering you!!I could rant with not to be believed conversations and arguments, but I want to get to the point.

Those of us without dogs are being annoyed, inconvenienced, and some people are afraid of dogs, while others are allergic. The close proximity of an elevator which is unavoidable in a 23 story building becomes very upsetting. We have had to replace carpeting frequently (at the expense of our condo association), pay for additional custodial help to clean up frequent accidents, and listen to barking from the balconies when dogs are left on them sometimes all day while the owner is out!

Our building attorneys say there is nothing that can be done since these animals are service or emotional support dogs that are protected by the ADA!

Anyone have any experience with this? Don't I have any rights? Any legal suggestions or agencies to consult?

Sunset On My Evening Walk: So Grateful for this-

Have a good, healthy, and safe week everyone!!

  2. Our neighbour has an emotional support dog which gets away with a lot compared to working dogs we’ve met with their owners. I don’t know what you can do in your situation. It is too bad there are so many dogs in your building. It would be good if there was a cap on how many could live in a building which is pet free.

  3. Hi Judee,

Thank you for visiting my blog. I live in Prince Edward Island in eastern Canada.

  4. We're going to keep things close to home for as long as we can too. My husband goes back to work in downtown Cleveland on June 1st and that will be enough risk for a bit I think. I liked American Dirt too. That first scene was so heartwrenching.

  5. I will be right there with you, waiting until we see what happens with opening up so quickly.

We live with apartments on one side of us and a two acre empty lot on the other. The people in the apartments cross through our front yard to get to the empty lot with their dogs, and often the dogs stop and do their business in our yard. That does not seem considerate to me. I'm saddened at the behavior of the people with the support dogs in your building. I tend to be wary of the need for emotional support animals.

I love hearing how much you enjoyed American Dirt. I'd expected to read it, but all the negativity directed at the author made me reconsider. Perhaps I shall read it now.

The root vegetable soup looks fabulous.

    Have a good week.

  6. I’m not a lawyer 😊, however from what I’ve read, emotional support animals are not considered service animals, and therefore not protected by federal laws. Perhaps your county has extra laws.
    See this: https://adata.org/guide/service-animals-and-emotional-support-animals

It’s unfair these people choose a pet free apartment complex to live and then want to have animals. Service animals I can understand. But these so called emotional support animals are getting out of control now.

  9. Wow, those emotional support dogs sound like a pain. I've been seeing ' American Dirt' crop up on everyone's blog. I'll have to check it out for sure!

  10. The ADA expressly excludes emotional support animals (distinct from service animals), however some states and local area governments have independent legislature that recognises them. You’ll have to search your local government website to find out what it says. Your board may also want to look into adding a premium for ES pet owners to cover additional costs.

Staying home is the smart choice, we are getting back to normal here but our daily new cases nationwide are in the single digits. I am apprehensive though, I’m hoping we don’t see a second wave in a few weeks.

Wishing you a great reading week

  11. I'm taking a wait and see, go slow approach to reopening as well. It feels safer to take it slow? And Dead To Me looks great! I saw a trailer for that on Netflix. I may try that one next after I finish up Into the night, which has been pretty good.

American Dirt also looks super interesting.

I hope you are able to find a solution to the emotional support dogs problem- it's too bad people can't be more considerate. It sounds like they need to tighten things up if it's supposed to be pet- free!

  12. It seems to me that if you live in a "pet-free" building, it should be 100% pet free. I've always been a huge dog lover, and would never move into a pet free building with my dog. It seems that their emotional support dogs who are meant to give them comfort are giving the rest of you the opposite of comfort. Not good at all!

  13. I just finished watching the second season of Dead to Me and it was really good. I hope there will be more seasons. The Triple Bean Salad looks delicious. Hope you have a great week!

  14. Yeah we don't plan to go out, probably not this year. We are happy at home. I am not sure about the dog issue. I have severe allergies to cats and some dogs bother me also. I wonder if it is a public vs. private ownership thing? I mean businesses can refuse to serve people without masks, or those people who refused to bake a cake for a gay wedding, so it might be the ownership of your building has made those choices which means it shouldn't really be advertised as pet-free.

Have a lovely weekend and stay well!

  15. My county has reopened, but I’m not ready to eat at restaurants or go to the mall yet. We still have 600+ COVID cases. I’ll keep an eye on the numbers before I venture out. Sorry about the dog problems. I know that emotional support dogs are not service dogs, so they don’t have the same legal rights. I’m not sure what all the differences are though. Have a good week!

  16. i think your lawyer might want to double check that emotional service dogs are actually covered under the ADA as i don't believe they. As someone else noted, they are not service dog and they have a different level of coverage if any. Frankly, as a dog owner and lover, I'm distressed that people are allowing their dogs to behave in such a manner. Service dogs would not do it - it would not be permitted - they are always on. It bothers me the way that some people have abused the situation and made it more difficult for those with properly trained service dogs who really need their valuable help. good luck.

  17. I cannot offer any suggestions, but I hope they don't start bringing in ponies and pigs. Sure do appreciate your concerns.

  18. I plan to read American Dirt ... I postponed it at first due to the controversy but still want to read it this summer. So I'm glad you liked it. As for dogs, I'm a big dog person love them, live with them etc. ... but think if your building is pet-free than that should be respected. Owners should live elsewhere if they want to have a pet.

  19. You will not be the last person to leave the house and mingle. That will be me. I did drive to Pier One for curbside pickup of my last order from them today. The place was packed (at least the parking lot was, people had to wait outside the store at safe distances to get in).

  20. Emotional support dog. Oh, you can't tell, but I'm rolling my eyes really hard. I'd be pissed too, if I were you.
