Six Mango Recipes for National Mango Day

Mangoes, Fruits, Food, Fresh, Healthy

I don't need a special day to enjoy eating a mango, but today, July 22, is officially National Mango Day and it is also my oldest son's birthday! To celebrate I've rounded up six of my favorite recipes that feature mango.

Happy Birthday Jon!! We love you!!

Did you know that mangos are actually they most popular fruit in the world and grown and cultivated in most tropical countries throughout the world?

Extremely popular in India, where they have over 100 varieties of mango, this ancient and considered sacred fruit of India is believed to go back 4 thousand years (I don't know how they know that- there are fossils of it they say). AND of course Budda (500 B.C.) was said to have meditated under a mango tree.

Mangoes come in all shapes, colors, and sizes in India as well.
In the United States we grow and seem to most familiar with the "Tommy Atkins" mango which is reddish yellow, large, and round.

In addition, we may see the golden yellow longer shaped and smaller Ataúlfo mango which is cultivated and exported from Mexico.

Mangos are extremely versatile and used in shakes, eaten as a fruit, made into desserts, used in main dishes and salads.

My husband introduced me to mangos over 50 years ago when we first met. As a new immigrant from Egypt, his family thrived on mangos. However, growing up and living in New Jersey, I had never even heard of a mango, but I have to say it was love at first bite.

My kids grew up eating mangos and my grandkids love them too. In fact last year for my older son's birthday his wife and kids made him a big fruit salad (in lieu of a cake since he chooses not to eat sugar and any junk food) made with lots of mango (photo from last year above). We usually buy mangoes by the case in the summer and it's our go-to fruit.

Are Mangoes healthy? You Bet!!
Mangoes are a relative of pistachios and cashews.
Their nutritional benefits are valuable contributing a substantial amount of antioxidants and vitamins. With zero fat or sodium, a Tommy Atkins mango provides 90% of your Vitamin C for the day as well as a significant amount of Vitamin A and lots of protective antioxidants.

In honor of National Mango Day, I am sharing some mango recipes and the easiest way to cut and eat a mango since it can be messy and tricky otherwise.

  1. You're making my mouth water. I put a little peach, some blueberries and even a few cherries on my oatmeal this morning. I said it looked more like a fruit salad. But I never buy a mango! I'll put it on my grocery list! Happy Birthday to your son. I have 4 sons!

  3. I just made a mango salsa for my husband :-) Happy birthday, Jon! I grew up eating our local mangoes, which are much smaller, but very sweet and aromatic.

  6. Oh, I love mangoes! But I had no idea it was mango day, or that there even was one! I'm sure your son enjoyed his special dessert; I remember the lovely fruit salad from last year. The pictures of all the mango delights are so fun and refreshing, perfect for summer. I hope you all enjoyed the special day. :)
