New! Beef Jerky - from Beyond Meat ( Plant-Based)

Plant-based "beef" jerky?
My friend Jan surprised me with a new product that's on the market. It's produced by Beyond Meat (vegan and GF) and is made to taste like "beef" jerky.

Beyond Meat Beef Jerky, vegan , gluten free

Jan attended a craft show in the Philadelphia area and the jerky was a promotional item that they was distributed at the show. She brought a package home for me to taste and since it is new, I thought I would review it on my blog.

Unlike some of the other Beyond Meat's products that I found to taste amazing but found their health value questionable, this seems to be more to my liking for an occasional treat or to take with me when traveling.

The "beef" jerky is low in fat, high in protein, gluten-free, non GMO or soy, doesn't need refrigeration until it is opened, and is made from somewhat decent ingredients.-

nutritional information for vegan beef jerky

These are the ingredients listed for the original:

Water, Mung Bean Protein, Brown Sugar, Pea Protein*, Natural Flavors, Gluten Free Oat Bran and Fiber, Salt, Expeller Pressed Canola Oil, Onion Powder and less than 1% of Vegetable Juice Color, Vinegar, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Pomegranate Concentrate, Spice, Garlic Powder, Citric Acid, Sunflower Lecithin.

*Peas are legumes. People with severe allergies to legumes like peanuts should be cautious when introducing pea protein into their diet because of the possibility of a pea allergy. Contains no peanuts or tree nuts.

This jerky could be a perfect snack for anyone gluten-free or vegan to take along while traveling when it may be difficult something gluten free and vegan such as in an airport, road trip, or even at the beach - whether for the day or on a long vacation. It's lightweight, easy to eat without needing any prep for a snack, and is high in protein.

How Did It Taste?
I liked it! A tad salty, but that's the nature of this type of product.
I have since seen it being sold on Amazon and did a search to find out that it is carried at Walmart.

Wallmart
I have to admit that it took 5 associates to find it for me at Walmart since it is a new product and not displayed with the beef jerky.
Where was it? It was with the "as seen on TV products" !!
I bought a 3 ounce package at Wallmart for $3.98.

Amazon
My friend Vicki, who is a vegetarian but not GF, had previously ordered a box online to take with her on vacation (and gave me a package too). The packages were smaller and it might have been more expensive than at Wallmart.

Have you seen or tried this new plant-based "beef" jerky?

Disclaimer: I am not being paid to promote this product. I simply tasted it and since it is gluten free and vegan, I am sharing my thoughts about it with my readers.

  1. I can't understand why non meat eaters want products that taste like meat. When I was vegetarian I never bought these types of things. I have tried a dried mushroom snack that has the same texture as jerky which was very nice. Have you seen anything there like that?

    1. There are so many imitation meat products on the market including seitan which has been around for at least 40 years since I became a vegetarian. I happen to enjoy a food that has a texture to it such as fake meat as opposed to all vegetables and beans. My objection to eating real meat is to killing animals and sustaining the planet.

    1. I always enjoy a product that has a texture I can bite into. So this works for me.

  3. I tried Beyond Beef’s hamburger for a while but eventually didn’t like it any more. And I’m not a fan of any jerky — too salty. So I think I’ll skip this!

    1. I tried it in the beginning and was thrilled with the Beyond Beef's hamburger, but after really reading the ingredients and high fat content, I decided it wasn't a healthy food after all.

  4. I haven't tried anything from the Beyond Beef line except the burgers and sausage. Didn't know they made jerky.

    1. Yes, I guess the manufacturers realize that there is a market for it among vegans.
