A Peek at My Week 7/17

We have started to a little more active outside ( not indoors anywhere)
This week I'm reviewing "100 recipes to live to 100! from the Blue Zone Cookbook- 2 Netflix Shows, and a Middle Eastern dessert and a yellow beet soup.

I'm still not eating out, getting my nails or hair done, or going to anyone's house, but we have started to have my older son and his family (who live nearby) for dinner on the deck once a week, and today we also went canoeing at a beautiful lake at a local park. Despite being 96 degrees, we had a great time.

My white cone shaped hydrangeas are just starting to bloom. One of my favorite flowers!

Thanks to everyone who wears a mask in public and is careful to social distance!

What I'm Reading
The Blue Zone Cookbook
100 recipes to live to 100

Blue Zone Cookbook

It's both a cookbook and a good read about people who live in what they call "Blue Zones." National Geographic studied areas where large groups of people lived to 100 and led healthy active lives. They found various places in the world and interviewed the people to find out-what they ate, how they lived, exercise, etc. It turns out that most of them thrived on plant based food or very little fish. Very fascinating read and includes 100  recipes as well.

What I'm Watching: How Do You Know ?

Netflix Movie: How Do You Know

A cute love-story comedy that is light and entertaining. It has a great cast: Reese Witherspoon, Jack Nicolas, Paul Rudd, and Owen Wilson. If you have 2 hours and are just in the mood for simple, this may be your movie! We enjoyed it. I give it a B

Netflix : Dirty John

This is a modern day story of a con artist who is charming, convince-able, and dangerous. It is based on a true crime anthology that has been made into a series. The acting is good and story is intriguing, but the naiveness of the women that fall for him, is somewhat  difficult to believe. These professional women are vulnerable and ignore all the red flags that warn them of this narcissist's and psychopath's behavior. Even after being clearly told of his criminal past, the women forgive him and are fooled by his charm and often fall right back into the same trap with this man. Although my husband and I keep saying this is so ridiculous, somehow we keep watching and want to see what will happen. It's not the best, but it's not the worst. I'd give it a B-.

What I'm Cooking: Mehalabeya (link to recipe)

Cornstarch pudding with rosewater

Mehalabeya - One of our favorite desserts. It is basically a cornstarch pudding that is quick and easy to make, but it needs 24 hours to chill in the fridge. Seasoned with orange blossom water and rosewater, this Middle Eastern dessert tastes awesome. Vegan and Gluten Free-

Yellow Beet Borsht - link to the recipe

No more messy red beets that stain everything and a hard to work with. Golden beets are yellow and have a thinner skin and don't stain. I got them in the organic section of my regular supermarket. They made a lovely chilled soup that tasted delicious hot as well. Vegan and Gluten Free

Sharing this post on the Sunday Salon where anyone can share what they are doing this week!

  1. I'm fascinated with the Blue Zones Cookbook. I added it to my wish list. It would be great if my library would get a copy. My dad is actively trying to make it to 100 (he's 93) so he might like to see it, too.

Love the sound of Mehalabeya. It sounds very much like something I'd enjoy, especially in the summer when it is so warm.

I added How Do You Know to my list at Netflix. Thanks for the thumb up.

Have a good week and take care.

  13. Your cooking choices sound really innovative. Using yellow beets is clever -- I love beet borscht but my husband hates beets so I have made it only once: with friends and not in my own kitchen!

  16. Thank you for this little glimpse into your week, Julie! I'm so pleased you are getting to visit with your son. We are staying close to home as well, but our son and his partner are visiting occasionally too. I love yellow beets! I need to check out the movie How Do You Know. I really like Reese Witherspoon and it sounds like fun. Thank you for being a part of the Hearth and Soul Link Party Community. Take care.
