Caught In The Act: Grabbing Some Corn

squirrel eating a corn on the cob

Yup! This may be corny, but I caught a squirrel who stole corn on the cob right off the stalk from a neighboring farm. My son happens to have a farm directly behind his back yard which grows corn.

The other day, I stopped by my son’s house. I walked through the backyard, and as I walked across the yard, I spotted something comical—a squirrel with an ear of yellow corn on the cob in his mouth!

He was trying to make his way across the yard to get away from me, but he was having a hard time running with that big ear of corn.

Despite me standing there taking pictures, the squirrel decided that eating his corn was more important than escaping. He stopped, sat down, and took a few good bites until he eventually scurried away with the corn cob still in his mouth.

It was pretty entertaining to watch. It was surprised to come across this little guy carrying around an ear of corn almost half his size.

My daughter-in-law tells me that the squirrel isn't the only one enjoying the farmer's corn. They also have a local groundhog that has been helping himself to an ear or two right off the stalks as well!

I've also seen fox and deer in their yard near the corn. I guess their backyard has some very happy—and very well-fed—visitors.

I also saw deer last night in my friend Vicki's yard. We have a lot of deer in our neighborhoods. Do you?

Here is a post from two years ago:

Our weather is getting a little bit cooler. It's been in the low 60's and cloudy. I started thinking about soup. How about you?

  1. Didn't know they eat corn, thought they just eat nuts and seeds. Some cute pictures, Judee.

  2. That field of corn must be like a smorgasbord for the animals and it’s not surprising they gather at the buffet. Yes, fall is on the way. We have started making soups in earnest. So far we have batches of chicken orzo, and ham and potato. More to come! Last night we had fried rice for dinner.

  3. Squirrels are something else, aren't they?
We do have way too many dear in our neighborhood. I can't have any flowers out front because they will nibble away. Thankfully our backyard is fenced in (6 foot high) or I wouldn't be able to have a garden and flowers. I have watched them jump our neighbors 4-foot-high fences with no problem.

    1. I feed the birds, but it ends up that the squirrels eat all the seed in a half hour.

  4. Haha, lucky squirrel! I have to admit, I wouldn't be able to resist plucking some fresh corn for myself, given the opportunity. When it's straight from the stalk like that, even raw, it's such a treat.

    1. We always eat our corn raw. It's so sweet and tender

    2. Hannah,
Exactly so! Most animals, even human ones, would grab a corn cob and sit quietly and eat it. As long as they have enough strength to carry it away

  5. That reminds me! I have some ears of corn I wanted to put out for the critters! I'm going to do it right now!

  6. I think that corn qualifies as critter candy! But that little squirrel determined to eat that corn cob is so adorable. God bless him ... he was hungry! I love squirrels. If there are deer in our neighborhood, I never see them! However, a few winters ago when we had a light snow, we saw unmistakable deer tracks going the length of our yard! It made us wonder if they wander around at night when we are not looking, haha! xoxo 🏴‍☠️

  9. That squirrel wasn’t stealing corn -- he was grocery shopping!

Love the shots of the squirrel. I know he shouldn't be stealing, but he's very cute! The deer are beautiful too.

  18. That is so thoughtful of that farmer to grow food for all the animals...ha ha. I find cobs of eaten corn in my garden often and wonder where it came from as none of my closest neighbors grow corn. I'm sure it is the squirrels.
