31 Degree Cold Spell in Miami- Rediculous

This has to be one of the coldest Januaries I can remember in South Florida. It's been in the 50's and 60's most of the month but this coming Sunday morning, temperatures are expected to dip down to 31 degreesyes, 31! The photo above  is of my friend feeding the sea gulls on our morning walk about 7:30 AM when the temperatures were around 50 degrees.

It will be cold enough to snow… though I’m pretty sure that won’t be happening. Even though the morning will start out very cold, by afternoon, the temps should climb back into the mid-to upper 50s. Right now it's 37 degrees.

I'm not complaining especially when I realize some areas of the US are experiencing temperatures in the single digits or even below zero temperatures.

With the chill in the air, I started making a pot of soup. My Instant Pot red lentil soup was on the menu for dinner, and I prepped a tasty lentil loaf for tomorrow—perfect meals to warm us up in our "winter" weather.

Cold Weather But We Have No Heat In Our Condo

We do not have heat in our condo in Florida- however, because our condo is so well insulated with condos on both sides of us and the inner hallway, our apartment stays pretty warm- although I've never been here when it's been 31 degrees! This will be a first in our 14 winters in South Florida.

Daily Morning Walks In the Colder Weather

I have not let the cooler temps stop me from taking my 1 hour morning walk along the beach and Intracoastal. I've actually been enjoying a brisk walk in the cooler air. However, I have been wearing a coat. I keep one of those puffy coats in Florida that can be folded into a ball for traveling.

Personally, I don’t mind the cooler temperatures as long as they only stick around for a short while. There’s something actually refreshing about the change from the hot weather. Lately, most days have hovered in the mid-60s during mid day and only dipped into the 50s at night.

Miami Beach Vacationers

That said, I can imagine it’s a bit disappointing for anyone vacationing in Miami Beach, hoping for beach days and pool time.

The pool is empty- no one is at the pool

A few years ago I wrote a post about the iguanas and how they become almost paralyzed in the cold weather.

Green Iguana, Lizard, Reptile, Animal

They literally fall out of the trees in coma like state when it gets very cold. Iguanas can be very large and it is scary. You can read my iguana post here,

Despite this cold spell, our weather will probably be warm again soon. Probably back to the 60's and 70's before we know it. We have a short winter.

How is your weather? Are you able to take daily walks? What is your comfort food?

  1. Poor iguanas...it looked so confused. Anybody helped them? The weather here is pretty nice. Just below 0C...I wish there were sunshine though.

  2. My walking has suffered in the last week or so of constant below freezing temps in East Texas. Today we have errands and will get some steps in, needless to say, I miss the activity of warmer days!

  3. It's almost nine and 0. And nope, not walking. Too worried about falling and the lung doc says beware of the cold, so ventures out are only the necessary ones. I don't mind because there is enough to do here! But I'm sorry when you went to FL to get away from winter you are still sort of in it -- maybe less than us, but still!

  4. This year, even in India, in our state, it was quite cold than usual. Good to know the daily walks routine. Surprising fact about Iguana. I did not know it. Thank you for sharing! :) Have a happy weekend!

  5. To me 30 degrees in South Florida always felt so much colder than 30 degrees here in Illinois. I think it is because of all of the moisture in the air there. It was a bone chilling cold to me.
We had central heating and a fireplace when we lived there. I don't remember ever using the heat, but we did use the fireplace on occasion just to take the chill out of the house in December or January. Stay warm!

  6. Oh 30F that's about 0C. That's pretty cold! Over here in Scotland it has been really mild and raining. Though today was a bit chilly due to the icy cold wind. Walking in the house more, I reallly cannot wait until I can walk again and get out in nature. Each day I see tiny improvements but it will take a long time for things to get back to normal with my ankle. Comfort food...Tofu! I love it. I am a vegetarian and had been craving chicken, so I started eating more Tofu musta need the protein! Not craving chicken anymore. Gotta listen to your body! :-D

  7. It was 2° when I got up this morning, and we still have a good bit of snow on the ground from the 8 to 10 inches that we got over the weekend. I personally like winter, but I would also like it to be shorter. One good snow and I’m done, and we got that back in November. It’s been a long time since I was last in Florida, but when my husband and I went quite a few years ago it was in January and it did snow. I have a friend who lives in Niceville and he said they got snow. Stay warm!

  8. It is hard to imagine Florida that cold. We have only walked one day this week due to the windy cold and snow here.

  9. Can't believe how cold it is there! Good for you still getting in your daily walk. When it gets cold I never want to get out of bed haha.

  10. The world's climates seem to totally out of control. While your part of the world is freezing to death, far below average temperatures, we in Australia are burning ourselves to death. 45c seems to be a new normal here, which I am guessing is 113f.

  11. It sounds like you're prepared for whatever Mother Nature sends your way.

  12. No heating pads? 31F here would be a heatwave. But I understand that for southern birds, it's too cold. Wishing you a yummy rest of the weekend!

  13. That is quite a cold snap for Miami, 31 degrees is practically freezing for there. I love how you balance the chill with cozy routines like your morning walks and warming meals; it makes the cold feel almost enjoyable.

  16. It's supposed to go down to the 20s here in Central Florida tonight. The weather this winter is horrible.

  17. As you know from seeing my recent blog posts, we are having winter weather in New England with the 20-inch snowfall in nashua, NH, last weekend. Temps have been in the single digits overnight and barely 20s daytime, so the snow and ice will remain for quite awhile. Mainly because of the ice, I have not taken daily walks; however, I did walk to the library this wek (carefully) and we will be walking downtown for breakfast today (Sat). Comfort food is soup and two types were made this week: chicken and broccoli-avocado.

  18. Having a chilled iguana drop onto one's head would be quite a shock.

  19. these cold temperatures have been paralyzing for me....poor little iguanas, they are so tiny!! our weather is frigid, single digits here. i'm glad you are still able to enjoy your walks, it is difficult to walk in extreme weather, heat or cold. you have been visiting me so you have been seeing what i have been cooking and trust me when i say, we are not starving!! soup has been on our menu also. there is nothing better during the winter!!

  20. My kids live in Florida. I spoke to my Son yesterday and he didn't mention how the cold. But 31° is flippen cold. That is what it is here in Oregon for our winters. You might want to turn on your stove for some heat. Lovely photos.

  21. That first photo is beautiful with the birds and sky. It's been pretty cold here lately, in the 20's early mornings. I'm sorry you don't have heat in your condo. The iguanas are such strange looking creatures. I am heading on over to the link you shared right now.

May you have wonderful February days ahead.

  22. I love that you don't let the cold weather hold you back from your daily walks! I haven't been able to get mine in as we have so much snow everywhere and below freezing temps. Thankfully we have the heating to deal with that though.

  23. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. Weather is why people GO to Florida in the winter! It was -6 when I got up; now 12. Heat wave. They say it will be warmer next week. I'm sorry about the lack of heat but well done on the walks. I'm too freaked out to walk when there is snow or ice (falling) or extreme cold (lung issues). So, I'm glad I love to nest!

  25. Not that I've ever been, but it is quite difficult to imagine Florida being that cold!

    All the best Jan

  26. It's been WAY TOO cold this winter. Down in the teens here in SC. I fear that my gardenias and azaleas won't be blooming this spring! Sigh!

  27. That iguana is beautiful. Reminds me a bit of our water dragons. We have had heatwaves all summer; can't wait for winter. Still over 30C every day! It's funny when i see 31 degrees, i think of the heat ...
