Ginger Beer Mocktail - "Moscow Mule"


My new favorite drink is the Moscow Mule. It's made with non alcoholic ginger beer, vodka, and lime juice. If you don't drink alcohol, you can leave out the vodka and add a splash of club soda or cranberry juice. If you do use vodka, read the label to make sure it is gluten free. Many vodkas are made from grains; some are made from potatoes.

 It also seems traditional to now drink the Moscow Mule in a copper mug. There is a reason that I avoid copper, and I posted an article about it- copper toxicity and depression and anxiety.




What's the story with Ginger Beer
I actually never heard of it until I tasted a sample at one of the supermarkets. Ginger beer is actually non alcoholic! It serves as a mixer for other drinks such vodka or juice . However, some people drink it solo to soothe their stomach. It is definitely a very strong fermented ginger taste and cannot be compared to ginger ale.

Personally, I am enamored with the stuff

It tastes great, is refreshing and looks like a little bottle of beer. It's gluten free and there is a low sugar version that I do not believe is made with artificial sweeteners, just minimal sugar- a bottle is only 37 calories.

You can be as creative as you wish making your own cocktails or mocktails, choosing from a variety of fruit juices or liquors,  club soda, or lime juice, or you can drink it right out of the cute little bottle.



I did a little research on ginger beer. 
It turns out they started drinking ginger bear in the 1800's in England and it's colonies. It began at the time of the spice trade with the Orient and the Caribbean sugar production. At the time the ginger beer had alcohol in it; kind of like a hard lemonade. Today, ginger beer is being produced without alcohol.

How is it made ? 

Ginger beer is fermented with yeast. The basic ingredients are  ginger, water and sugar. The sugar is fermented in the yeast and then it is carbonated and placed in bottles.

Mocktail Ingredients: 
6 ounces of ginger beer ( I bought the light ginger beer which has less sugar)
1/4 cup of lime juice
1 cup of orange juice
Slice of oranges
Ice

Directions:
Mix all ingredients together and then stir . Enjoy

  10. I was first introduced to ginger beer in Bermuda. At the time, I only knew about using it in an alcoholic drink, a Dark and Stormy. I've since seen so many other recipes for it--alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Happy to see your new recipe, Judee!
