This has to be one of the coldest Januaries I can remember in South Florida. It's been in the 50's and 60's most of the month but this coming Sunday morning, temperatures are expected to dip down to 31 degrees—yes, 31! The photo above is of my friend feeding the sea gulls on our morning walk about 7:30 AM when the temperatures were around 50 degrees.
It will be cold enough to snow… though I’m pretty sure that won’t be happening. Even though the morning will start out very cold, by afternoon, the temps should climb back into the mid-to upper 50s. Right now it's 37 degrees.
I'm not complaining especially when I realize some areas of the US are experiencing temperatures in the single digits or even below zero temperatures.
With the chill in the air, I started making a pot of soup. My Instant Pot red lentil soup was on the menu for dinner, and I prepped a tasty lentil loaf for tomorrow—perfect meals to warm us up in our "winter" weather.
Cold Weather But We Have No Heat In Our Condo
We do not have heat in our condo in Florida- however, because our condo is so well insulated with condos on both sides of us and the inner hallway, our apartment stays pretty warm- although I've never been here when it's been 31 degrees! This will be a first in our 14 winters in South Florida.
Daily Morning Walks In the Colder Weather
I have not let the cooler temps stop me from taking my 1 hour morning walk along the beach and Intracoastal. I've actually been enjoying a brisk walk in the cooler air. However, I have been wearing a coat. I keep one of those puffy coats in Florida that can be folded into a ball for traveling.
Miami Beach Vacationers
That said, I can imagine it’s a bit disappointing for anyone vacationing in Miami Beach, hoping for beach days and pool time.

A few years ago I wrote a post about the iguanas and how they become almost paralyzed in the cold weather.

They literally fall out of the trees in coma like state when it gets very cold. Iguanas can be very large and it is scary. You can read my iguana post here,
Despite this cold spell, our weather will probably be warm again soon. Probably back to the 60's and 70's before we know it. We have a short winter.
How is your weather? Are you able to take daily walks? What is your comfort food?
Poor iguanas...it looked so confused. Anybody helped them? The weather here is pretty nice. Just below 0C...I wish there were sunshine though.
ReplyDeleteMy walking has suffered in the last week or so of constant below freezing temps in East Texas. Today we have errands and will get some steps in, needless to say, I miss the activity of warmer days!
ReplyDeleteIt's almost nine and 0. And nope, not walking. Too worried about falling and the lung doc says beware of the cold, so ventures out are only the necessary ones. I don't mind because there is enough to do here! But I'm sorry when you went to FL to get away from winter you are still sort of in it -- maybe less than us, but still!
ReplyDeleteThis year, even in India, in our state, it was quite cold than usual. Good to know the daily walks routine. Surprising fact about Iguana. I did not know it. Thank you for sharing! :) Have a happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteTo me 30 degrees in South Florida always felt so much colder than 30 degrees here in Illinois. I think it is because of all of the moisture in the air there. It was a bone chilling cold to me.
ReplyDeleteWe had central heating and a fireplace when we lived there. I don't remember ever using the heat, but we did use the fireplace on occasion just to take the chill out of the house in December or January. Stay warm!
Oh 30F that's about 0C. That's pretty cold! Over here in Scotland it has been really mild and raining. Though today was a bit chilly due to the icy cold wind. Walking in the house more, I reallly cannot wait until I can walk again and get out in nature. Each day I see tiny improvements but it will take a long time for things to get back to normal with my ankle. Comfort food...Tofu! I love it. I am a vegetarian and had been craving chicken, so I started eating more Tofu musta need the protein! Not craving chicken anymore. Gotta listen to your body! :-D
ReplyDeleteIt was 2° when I got up this morning, and we still have a good bit of snow on the ground from the 8 to 10 inches that we got over the weekend. I personally like winter, but I would also like it to be shorter. One good snow and I’m done, and we got that back in November. It’s been a long time since I was last in Florida, but when my husband and I went quite a few years ago it was in January and it did snow. I have a friend who lives in Niceville and he said they got snow. Stay warm!
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to imagine Florida that cold. We have only walked one day this week due to the windy cold and snow here.
ReplyDeleteCan't believe how cold it is there! Good for you still getting in your daily walk. When it gets cold I never want to get out of bed haha.
ReplyDeleteThe world's climates seem to totally out of control. While your part of the world is freezing to death, far below average temperatures, we in Australia are burning ourselves to death. 45c seems to be a new normal here, which I am guessing is 113f.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you're prepared for whatever Mother Nature sends your way.
