Do This One Thing To Improve Your Health

Do This One Thing To Improve Your Health

You can do one thing to improve your health!

Sometimes I get off track and do not do all of the the healthy things I know I should and want to be doing for my health. It's usually because I get too stressed, busy, or tired. During times that I get offtrack, I like to remember to do at least this one thing to improve my health: Drink more water.

I'm basically a healthy eater, but I don't drink enough water.

Drinking water has many benefits. Hydration is important for many reasons:

  • detoxification
  • elimination
  • proper thinking
  • weight loss
  • and all bodily functions
  • How well can our minds work when we hold onto our toxins?
  • How well can we feel if we hold onto our toxins?
  • We may not feel it right away, but in time the proof will be in the pudding.

Water is a great flusher of toxins and essential to good health. In addition, I've read that students should drink water before a test, it helps them make better thought connections.

The only water that I know that I get every morning is because of a healthy habit that I've developed.  I find when I make it a routine, I do it without thinking. It's like brushing your teeth. No thinking or planning is involved.

My morning routine.
I get up early . My daily routine includes drinking a 16 ounce glass of water with a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar.

( click her for my apple cider weight loss drink recipe)

Apple cider vinegar is really good for you and helps detoxify and balance body ph. It's a habit I developed, and I just do it every morning . I sip it as I get dressed, check my emails, check my blog etc. It's like my morning coffee. but healthier.

Then I make sure that I exercise before I do anything else. If I don't do my morning run or exercise machine first thing- I usually get distracted with other things or  too lazy and just don't exercise. That's why 5-6 mornings a week- I just get up and do it!

Since I have those habits in place, I stick to them but I need to develop an afternoon routine to drink water. As the day progresses and I'm busy,  I don't always feel as good about my choices and I certainly forget to drink water!

So my new mantra is if I do nothing else- I need to drink more water-

Not drinking enough water is where I fall short and yet it's so easy. I am going to get into the habit of drinking another 16 ounce glass of water ( maybe with fresh lemon ) before I begin to cook dinner around 4:30 or 5:00..

That is my new habit to develop. It's simple and very beneficial. My message for today is
" If you do nothing else, drink more water"

Chocolate Donut Holes with Coconut Flour

Rolled donut holes

These simple bite size little chocolate donut holes are a healthy treat and a cinch to make.
You won't need any special equipment and can be enjoying one in no time.

Who doesn't love a chocolate donut hole?
These are especially good because they are grain free, healthy and quite tasty.
They are made of coconut flour ( buy in the health store or online) and very quick and easy.

If you do not want to use coconut flour, any kind of gluten free flour or regular flour will work.
However, if you decide not to use the coconut flour, reduce the almond milk to 1 Tablespoon instead of 3 Tablespoons. However, there are health benefits to baking with coconut flour.

chocolate donut holes

I like baking with coconut flour for many reasons.
  • Coconut flour is packed with fiber and therefore more filling and satisfying( The fiber also helps better elimination)
  • Coconut flour is tasty- has a unique appealing taste
  • Coconut flour requires a lot more liquid in the recipe which makes for a moist, silky product.
  • Coconut flour is rich in nutrients
  • Coconut flour is grain and gluten free
  • Coconut flour is lower in carbs which doesn't raise insulin levels as high as reg flour
In addition, coconut flour is very easy to use to bake cookies, cake, and these donut holes.

I like baking with coconut sugar because:
  • It is lower in carbohydrates than brown sugar or regular sugar
  • It creates less of an insulin spike
  • It contains nutrients

Pumpkin Pudding Bars- Grain Free/Gluten Free

gluten free pumpkin pudding bars

This simple seasonal pumpkin pudding bar snack can be made quickly and enjoyed by all. I called this recipe pumpkin pudding bars because they can be cut nicely into firm bars, yet have the consistency of a creamy pudding-like texture.

This tasty dessert will satisfy anyone's pumpkin craving.
Let's face it who isn't craving pumpkin this time of the year?  ! It seems to be everywhere right now.

In addition, this is a perfect healthy snack for kids.
It's not too sweet, can transport easily in a lunchbox, and makes a perfect after school snack that provides some protein and nutrients. A little whipped cream or whipped coconut cream topping would make it divine.

This recipe is grain free, gluten free, nut free and dairy free.

Gluten Free Pumpkin Pie with Grain Free Crust

gluten free pumpkin pie

Pumpkin Pie seems to be everyone's favorite pie, especially this time of the year! This easy to make gluten-free pumpkin pie is delicious.

I have been experimenting with simple crusts that are grain free. This crust is made from almonds and does not have to be rolled. I'm no fancy baker, so I was delighted with the easy simple recipe.

The pumpkin pie recipe has two steps:
  • the grain free/gluten free/ dairy free crust
  • the golden pumpkin filling ( DF GF too)

Make The Crust First
Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Ingredients for the Crust:
1 and 1/4 cups of raw almonds
1/2 coconut sugar ( available in health food stores) it looks and acts like brown sugar but healthier
2 Tablespoons of coconut oil or butter.

Crust Directions:
Use a food processor with the metal blade. Place the almonds and coconut oil in the food processor   Turn it on and as it is chopping, add coconut sugar slowly from the chute. Process on an off until the nuts become chopped small and the oil and coconut sugar begin to bind somewhat. Turn off the food processor and press the mixture into the base of a 9 inch pan and set aside.

Ingredients for The Filling:
1 15ounce can of organic pumpkin puree
1 and half cups of full fat coconut milk or organic half and half
2 large eggs, beaten
1/2 - 3/4 cup of coconut sugar
1 teaspoon of cinnamon+ 1/4 teaspoon dry ground ginger OR
use 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice mix (or make your own pumpkin pie spice mix )
1/8 teaspoon of sea salt
optional: 1/8 teaspoon cardamom** my favorite!! (only if you like cardamom)

Directions for The Filling
Using a large spoon, mix all filling ingredients in a medium sized bowl until smooth.
Pour the filling on top of the pie crust.
Place in preheated oven for 45 minutes

In just 45 minutes you will be eating a homemade delicious pumpkin pie with a dab of whipped cream on top!

I was excited because everyone, even those who were not gluten free,  enjoyed this healthy delicious pumpkin pie!!!

My notes:
This pie can be dairy-free/parve if you use coconut milk and coconut whipped cream in place of the dairy.
