Move Over, Fake Spiderwebs—Nature’s Got This Covered
It's definitely beginning to look more like fall as the leaves turn color and pumpkins and Halloween decorations begin to appear all around the neighborhood. So far— I've noticed fake spiderwebs, glowing pumpkins, giant dragons and ghosts, and spooky skeletons.
When I stepped outside in the fog for my early morning walk today, everything looked a little mysterious. I noticed hundreds of spider webs on the bushes and grass — real spider webs glistening in the morning mist. They were everywhere: stretched across bushes, woven through the grass, and draped over rocks like delicate lace.
It felt like nature’s version of Halloween décor — elegant, eerie, and completely unplanned. No store-bought decoration could ever match the artistry of a spider’s web on this foggy morning. However, after the sun came out and the fog lifted, the spider webs all seemed to disappear!!
But did they really disappear? I did a little research and found out.
On foggy mornings or when there’s dew on the grass, spider webs become much easier to see because moisture collects on the thin strands of silk. The tiny water droplets catch and scatter light, making the webs stand out clearly against the darker background of bushes and grass. Once the sun comes out and the moisture dries, the droplets disappear, and the silky spider webs becomes nearly invisible again.
So, it turns out that the webs are still there even when we can't see them.! How many spiders are living in my bushes???
Each web is typically made by one spider, so in the simplest case, one web ≈ one spider.
However, many spiders abandon old webs and make new ones regularly — sometimes even daily. So some of the webs you see could be old or inactive.
Keep an eye out after a misty night or foggy morning — you might find your own patch of natural spooky Halloween magic waiting outside your door.

ReplyDeleteThey are kind of fascinating
DeleteGreat photos. I love Hallowe'en so much. My favourite time of the year :-D I love that last photo with the gorgeous trees :-D
ReplyDeleteI do like fall a lot- not such a Halloween fan anymore.
DeleteGood morning I enjoyed your fall post Wen we lived in the woods we saw lots of these spider webs and huge beautiful webs in the trees-very cool to see.
ReplyDeleteWe have been sooo dry her most of the summer and this month as well-that we don't have much color this year-most went right to brown and just dried up.
We have had a lot of moisture- thus visible webs
DeleteThe colours are glorious. I love seeing spiders' webs in the morning mist - delicate and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYes- so pretty
DeleteWe were amazed to see a neighbouring house with halloween decorations up on 1 oct - it is not usual in Australia as it seems to be in the US - love all your photos and those amazing frosty spiders webs
ReplyDeleteYou are so right- In the US most houses are already decorated
DeleteI love the look of fall spider webs (unless I happen to accidentally run into them).
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on that Kathy
DeleteWhat an amazing sight! This is such an interesting example of nature. Thanks for sharing these spooky photos. I've never seen something like this in mass.
ReplyDeleteJudee, thank you for visiting my Halloween Tablescape this morning and leaving such a nice comment. Much appreciated. Happy Halloween!
Well I left the comment because it was absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for the inspiration.
DeleteI enjoy spotting webs in the backyard this time of year too. Such industrious spiders in this world!
ReplyDeleteso glad your back Marie. Yes, they have been working hard
DeleteWe have very little color yet so thank you for sharing your gorgeous photos. By the end of the month ours should be like yours. We do have the spiders and webs though. I saw a HUGE spider near the front porch starting a web and he had to go. I usually leave nature alone but like I said, it was HUGE.
ReplyDeleteI usually leave spiders alone - but they're some big ones that are just too scary. I try to catch them in a paper cup and put them outside.
DeleteAren't they gorgeous! And fascinating. Your fall color up there sure is pretty; we don't have much to speak of yet. But I'm sure I'd see some of those pretty spider webs if I were up early enough, haha! Happy October, Judee! xoxo
ReplyDeleteYes, it's odd- weather is still very warm during the day ( cool at night) but leaves are turning and falling.
DeleteThat's so interesting about the spider webs and completely new to me. You're right about nature's Halloween decor! Tis the season! Our color is coming on. I think this week up north we may see some lovely color!
ReplyDeleteHave you seen a marbled orb web weaver yet this year? She's STUNNING.
ReplyDeleteNo - no idea what it is?
DeleteI always think spiders webs are works of art ... they are incredible.
ReplyDeleteI do like the Autumn season the colours are wonderful.
Love the Crudités and Dip for Halloween.
All the best Jan
Their webs are quite artistic and beautiful
DeleteI noticed this in my own yard the other day. I couldn't believe how many spider webs there were!
ReplyDeleteI know...I feel like there are hundreds but it could just be a few.
DeleteYou have no idea how often I walk into invisible spider webs!
ReplyDeleteTandy (Lavender and Lime) https://tandysinclair.com
I hate that.
DeleteSpider webs are definitely prominent this time of year, so creepy! Your Halloween dip is so cute!
ReplyDeleteJenna
Thank you Jenna
DeleteSpider webs in the fall are among the most glorious of nature’s sights. They bring great joy.
ReplyDeleteI do find them artistically beautiful.
DeleteI love all the Halloween decorations. Those spiderwebs are incredible! They fit right in with the decorations haha. I am excited to decorate my house for Halloween. It has been delayed because we have been having our kitchen cabinets refinished. I love the spooky veggie platter! I will have to try and recreate it this year!
ReplyDeleteThey are the real thing
DeleteOur leaves are just barely starting to turn, but I expect within the next week or two there will be an explosion of reds, oranges, and yellows. That's my favorite time of the year year when autumn is in full bloom.
ReplyDeleteYes, it seems to happen so quickly- one day nothing and then pop- they are there
DeleteThat is kind of creepy. I guess I'd think twice before sticking my hands into those bushes!
ReplyDeleteI agree- they seem to take over the bushes even though we may not see them.
DeleteI love seeing all the Halloween decorations come out! Nature isn't much help here, were it's still around 90 degrees everyday. Your spiders sure have been busy!
ReplyDeleteOur weather has been in the 80's and these spiders are really busy.
DeleteOops, anonymous about the 90 degree days was me!
ReplyDeleteI love misty mornings. Fog appeals to me as very mysterious and I love the poem that uses the image of The fog comes on little cat feet
ReplyDeleteThere is something appealing about the fog
Deletethe neighborhoods in our area look much the same and i LOVE it!! so many people really go all out around here!! one day soon i will be sharing all of the pictures i have been taking!! lobe the veggies and dip, i am going to hi-jack that idea!!

I love this time of the year. The colors, the cooler weather, the crispness of the outdoors, the lot. I also love to see Halloween decorations, whether they are provided by nature or by man. As a kid, because I was so shy, Halloween was not my favorite holiday. Now I absolutely love it, and celebrate all month long.
ReplyDeleteFoggy mornings are my favorite time to try and take photos of spider webs! With zoom lenses you can often see the beads of water on each strand. They really are remarkable works of art... but I try to not think about how many spiders might actually by lying in wait.
