Early Morning Ocean Walk - South Florida

ocean walk sign

The ocean walk is located directly across the street from my condo. The walk itself is beautiful, filled with small surprises every day. I frequently spot all kinds of birds, iguanas, insects, squirrels, and other little creatures that bring the path alive.

There are also people out walking their dogs, plenty of feral cats being fed by well-meaning folks despite the signs saying not to, and early-morning volleyball and pickle ball players already on the courts at 7:30 a.m. (By 9:00, the South Florida sun gets intense!)

I never tire of this route. The highlight for me is reaching the inlet beneath the bridge, where boats head out and the Caribbean blue ocean water and the Intracoastal meet. It’s consistently breathtaking—one of those simple, perfect moments I look forward to every morning.

I walk roughly 3 miles round-trip.  The path is fully paved and sits just beyond the beach—close enough to see the ocean as I walk but while still walking on the paved trail.

There is a Marina side where I often encounter  big black buzzard type of birds. I'm not sure of the proper name for these birds but they hang around in the trees, near the garbage, and near the picnic areas. They are big and ugly.

On occasion, I also get a glimpse of a cardinal. They look so pretty,

I see lots of pelicans on the ocean and also on the marina side .
You can see from the photo that I live in a city like area with lots of condos

I also see plenty of squirrels. They look cute, but they can be a real nuisance. Because so many tourists feed them, they’ve become unusually bold and often run right up to you looking for food. It can be a bit startling—one even ran up my friend’s leg while she was standing there on her cell phone.

I was even afraid getting these photos as they were getting very close.

More birds too- but I can't identify them.

Do you take walks? Where do you walk? What do you see?

  1. Love the photos! Seeing the beautiful cardinal and the majestic pelican is wonderful, even if those bold squirrels are a bit too friendly!

  3. They need that sign at Monkey Mia, Western Australia! A pelican - and I had no food - chased me!
Boy, did I get scared, huge birds they are.
We had a cute Squirrel-family in our place, sadly I didn´t see them in a longer time. Ours look different, too.
